Micro-insurance is defined as insurance that is accessed by or accessible to the low-income population. Zimbabwe has potential in relation to micro insurance, much of the infrastructure & regulation is already in place and the risk that the poor face should provide significant demand for suitable, affordable products. E.g., HIV/AIDS and other chronic disease pandemic has been a significant catalyst to the market to develop and implement basic credit life and funeral insurance products. Intuitively, it makes sense for the poor to buy insurance considering the multitude of risks they face. Prospects of disease and illness because of poor nutrition or unsanitary environments, informal and substandard construction for housing and business, food insecurity and natural disasters are all strong
reasons why the poor should demand and buy insurance. When a disaster occurs with no cover, it comes at a great expense to the poor, driving them deeper into poverty. However, the poor do not buy insurance. The poor do demand insurance. Multiple studies and market research illustrate this point. MicroSave-Africa's demand assessments in Kenya & Uganda revealed that the poor desire a range of insurance products, including health, death of a family member, theft etc. and are willing to pay premiums to cover the risk they face. Best Community MicroSure has developed micro community funeral, micro community medical, micro community investments, micro community legal, micro community banking, and projects to target the marginalized low-income group.
